Ecobee SmartSensor

The Ecobee SmartSensor is a wireless accessory for Ecobee smart thermostats that measures room temperature and detects occupancy through passive infrared motion sensing. This enables the "Follow Me" feature—when the sensor detects you in a room, the thermostat prioritizes that room's temperature.

Compact at just 40mm square, the sensor communicates with your Ecobee thermostat via a secure, energy-efficient 915MHz radio frequency from up to 60 feet away, through walls and floors. The CR2477 battery provides up to 5 years of operation.

The sensor uses infrared technology to detect human presence while ignoring pets, reducing false readings. Place sensors in bedrooms, home offices, or any room with hot/cold spots. Ecobee recommends mounting at about 5 feet height for optimal temperature accuracy, aimed at doorways and seating areas for motion detection.

SmartSensor works with Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, Enhanced, Essential, Lite, SmartThermostat with voice control, ecobee4, and ecobee3. One SmartSensor is included with the Premium model; additional sensors are sold in 2-packs.

Home Assistant integration works via the Ecobee cloud API, though as of March 2024, Ecobee no longer accepts new developer API keys. The alternative is using the HomeKit Device integration, which brings sensors into Home Assistant through Apple HomeKit.

The sensor works with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings through the connected thermostat. Note that sensors cannot function independently—they require an Ecobee thermostat as the hub.
